Medi-Kel Clinic Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a primary care physician?

A: A family doctor (primary care physician) who knows and understands your needs can be your most valuable health partner. A host of specialists working on separate health problems may not see the whole health picture or get a good understanding of what's important to you. In choosing a doctor, there are a lot of questions to ask, but these 3 matter the most:

  • Is the doctor well-trained and experienced?
  • Will the doctor work in partnership with you?

For more information on choosing a Primary Care Physician please consult your BC Health Guide in the Work in Partnership with Your Doctor section.

The Doctors at Medi-Kel Clinic value Patient Care Partnership!  Please visit our Doctors Page for more information and to see which Doctors are taking new patients.

How do I make an appointment?

To make an appointment. It's best to schedule your routine appointments well in advance of your visit, so you can choose the time and day most convenient for you.

When you call for an appointment, please let us know your symptoms or medical needs, so we can schedule enough time for your visit. Please limit your concerns to one major item and one minor item per booked appointment.

When you come to the doctor's office or clinic for your appointment, please register at the reception desk. You will need to present your British Columbia Care card.

It's best to bring a list of any medications you are taking, important information about your health history and any questions you may have about your health. If you are transferring your care from a different physician or office, it is helpful to have a copy of your old medical records or the doctor may request to have them transferred.

How do I cancel my appointment?

If you cannot keep your appointment, please call us as soon as possible. We need at least 24 hours notice so we can extend this valuable time to another patient.  We will then reschedule your appointment. Likewise, because medical emergencies do occur, your physician may be delayed sometimes. If this happens, we'll make every effort to contact you concerning the delay, and we'll reschedule your appointment if necessary.

Do Medi-Kel Physicians provide medical care after regular business hours?

No. If you have a life threatening emergency, please call 911 or go directly to Kelowna General Hospital.

The BC Health Guide Online provides health advice and information from a Registered Nurse anytime you need it day or night. Please visit BC HealthGuide  for more information  This is a free service.

Will I be called when my test results come in?

Staff at Medi-kel Clinic will call anyone whose test results show a need for a follow up visit. However, due to legal reasons staff cannot share the results over the phone or answer your questions.  Please see your Doctor if you have questions about your test results.

What happens during an Office Visit?

During an Office Visit the Doctor may:

  • Collect information from you regarding your medical condition, past medical problems, current medications, drug allergies and possibly your family medical history.
  • Perform physical examinations as necessary.
  • Perform office lab work.
  • Formulate a diagnosis or possible diagnosis and plan treatment or start additional investigations.
  • Explain their findings to you.
  • Prescribe any necessary medications considering the possible risks and adverse effects of medication and explain them to you.
  • Refer to a specialist when appropriate.

It for these reasons that we are not able to predict the length of each individual appointment. We may also request you book a second appointment.  We thank you in advance for your patience!

What can I do to help keep the Doctor running ontime?

There are several things you can do to keep staff and physicians running on time.

  • Focus on one major health concern per visit and book additional appointments for other unrelated concerns.
  • Bring a list of your current medications.
  • Arrive on time and check in at the reception desk.
  • Whenever possible please follow up with the physician who initiated your treatment plan unless you are advised to see another doctor.
  • Bring a translator if your English is poor.
  • You are welcome to have anyone accompany you.  However, if you do not want that person/persons to be present when your medical concerns are discussed, please ask them to wait in the reception area.

Can I renew my prescription by phone?

We are unable to provide prescription renewals by phone and encourage patients to book a follow up appointment.
