Medi-Kel Clinic Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I choose a primary care physician? A: A family doctor (primary care physician) who knows and understands your needs can be your most valuable health partner. A host of specialists working on separate health problems may not see the whole health picture or get a good understanding of what's important to you. In choosing a doctor, there are a lot of questions to ask, but these 3 matter the most:
For more information on choosing a Primary Care Physician please consult your BC Health Guide in the Work in Partnership with Your Doctor section. The Doctors at Medi-Kel Clinic value Patient Care Partnership! Please visit our Doctors Page for more information and to see which Doctors are taking new patients. Back to TopQ: How do I make an appointment? A: After choosing a Family Doctor, call his or her office to make an appointment. It's best to schedule your routine appointments well in advance of your visit, so you can choose the time and day most convenient for you. When you call for an appointment, please let us know your symptoms or medical needs, so we can schedule enough time for your visit. When you come to the doctor's office or clinic for your appointment, please register at the reception desk. You will need to present your British Columbia Care card. It's best to bring a list of any medications you are taking, important information about your health history and any questions you may have about your health. If you are transferring your care from a different physician or office, it is helpful to have a copy of your old medical records or have them transferred. Back to TopQ: How do I cancel my appointment? A: If you cannot keep your appointment, please call us as soon as possible with at least 24 hours notice so we can extend this valuable time to another patient. We will then reschedule your appointment. Likewise, because medical emergencies do occur, your physician may be delayed sometimes. If this happens, we'll make every effort to contact you concerning the delay, and we'll reschedule your appointment if necessary. Back to TopQ: I received a very important medical diagnosis recently. What do I do if I want a second opinion? A: Talk to your Family Doctor or specialist about your desire for a second opinion. Your physician may be able to recommend another physician. Back to TopQ. Should I have a medical test to diagnose my health problem?A. Throughout your life you will have to make health decisions for your self and your family. The decisions you make will influence your overall well-being as well as the quality and cost of your care. In general, people who work with their doctors to make health decisions are happier with the care they receive and the results they achieve. It is important to share in every decision about your health. Medical tests are important tools, but they have limits. Informed consumers know medical tests have costs and risks as well as benefits. It is important for you to learn the facts about the Medical Test; consider the risks and benefits; ask about the costs and let your Family Doctor know about your concerns. Please visit the Shared Decisions on Health Care Section of the BC Health Guide Online for more information Back to TopQ. Should I see a specialist about my health problem? A. Specialists are doctors who have in-depth training and experience in a particular area of medicine. For example, a cardiologist has years of special training to deal with heart problems. A visit to a specialist often costs more than a visit to your regular doctor, and the tests and treatments that you receive may be more expensive. Of course, specialist often provide the information you need to help you decide what to do about a major health problem.
